This is a song my family used to sing together, on road trips and gathered around camp fires and what not. We have many songs like this, which have become part of the family tradition, most being old folk songs and hymns . Another one is “The Fox”, yet another is “Tis a Gift”. My dad’s side of the family is an old New England Quaker family which is where I grew up (New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Vermont.) I have his side of the family to thank for my love of these very old folk tunes. As many times as I’ve sung this song, I’ve never thought to look up a single recorded version. In my mind, it’s always just been one of my family’s songs, which has existed forever and which I’ve always known by heart, woven into the fabric of my character. I was just singing it to my daughter and thought “I wonder if this song has ever been recorded?” Haha This is beautiful.

A Family getting together to make great music! If it were that simple but it was! One cannot put the clock back so we cannot live as their records first came out. I guess some of us will just have to be satisfied that we heard the Beatles, Small Faces and the Stones "Brand Noo"! I was talking to my Grandmother today who is 100 and she just happened to remember the lyrics of this song from when her Mother passed away. She didn't know the name of it so I googled the lyrics she knew and found it. I played it on Alexa and she was blown away that I found it and sang right along every word like she had just heard it last week. Made my day!
